The Beer Hunt: We were in Jackson, Wyoming for the same reason pretty much all non-residents are in Jackson in May: they are either coming from or going to Grand Teton National Park. In our case, we had just arrived with my parents and planned to head into the park the next day. After admiring the antler arches in the town square, we ate lunch and sampled beers at the Snake River Brewing Company.

The Beer Hunt: Phil convinced everyone to hit one more brewery before heading home – Bristol Brewing. He indulged in a Mass Transit Ale, whose logo featured his favorite vehicle – a VW bus. Phil not only brought home a pint glass emblazoned with that logo, but also one with a Laughing Lab Scottish Ale logo for dog-loving me.

The Beer Hunt: Now that everyone had suffered through a starter beer, they were ready for more. Phantom Canyon Brewing Co.’s great downtown location (inside the historic Cheyenne Building, built in 1901) drew them in.

Roosters / 25th Street Brewing Company
The Beer hunt: Roosters deserves to be a lot higher on our microbrewery list, maybe even #1, but ignorance on our part and lack of souvenir pint glasses on theirs resulted in this Ogden brewery being listed as #26. We had both eaten here multiple times, but Roosters’ tasty entrees had distracted us from the fact that they brewed their own beers.
The first time we showed up with the intent to appreciate Roosters as a brewery, they didn’t have any pint glasses for sale, so we brought home a growler (now broken!) featuring their old-school logo and “25th Street Brewing Co.” (a name they seem to have abandoned). When we showed up in March 2001, they had two different glasses to choose from: one with the Roosters logo printed in red, and one printed in white that celebrated the role that local ski resort Snowbasin’s Grizzly downhill course would play in the upcoming 2002 Winter Olympics. We splurged and bought one of each.
Before we moved out of state, we ended up with another Roosters growler bearing the logo shown above (since traded away). On a return trip to Utah, Phil tried out Roosters’ Layton location (open since 2005) and brought me home a t-shirt.
Roosters has lots to crow about: downtown location, cute (rooster-themed) atmosphere, relaxing patio, excellent food and highly drinkable brews. We’ve got more than a handful of happy memories of hanging out with friends and family at this first-rate Ogden establishment.

The Beer hunt: When we roadtripped to Moab a year ago, we stopped in at Eddie McStiff’s but failed to get any service and left. This time around they didn’t stiff us out of our beers or a pint glass. A bartender was available to pour me a Moab Blueberry Wheat and Phil a Raspberry Wheat. There was even an open pool table upstairs so we played a few games while we enjoyed the brews.

The Beer hunt: We hit Groggs Pinnacle Brewing Co. on our drive down to Moab (just a quick detour off of 191). Phil downed a pint of raspberry wheat. I went for the apricot wheat. We shared a tasty homemade pretzel that arrived polka-dotted with enormous chucks of rock salt. Too bad they didn’t have a pint glass for us to take home. We made do with a coaster.

Brookhaven Brewery
The Beer hunt: According to my journal, we made a specific trip to Midvale to drink at “the last microbrewery in northern Utah that we haven’t been to yet” – Brookhaven Brewery. We sat by the fireplace in the near-empty log cabin-style building, ate lunch and tried out their raspberry-flavored beer, which I reported was not as good as Smiling Moose’s. I’m not sure if everyone felt let down by the brews, but Brookhaven didn’t even last another year. Since they didn’t have any merchandise for sale or even a coaster, the only memento I have of them is my journal entry. I couldn’t even dig anything up online, except an exterior shot of the building.

The Beer hunt: When we stopped in, Uinta Brewing Company was located in a refurbished auto repair shop at 389 West 1700 South. Phil drank two samples while I shivered in their drafty, pint-sized tasting room off the main brewing floor. Although their bare-bones facility didn’t impress, they did have pint glasses for sale. We added one more to the collection. I enjoy the homonym fun that the word Uinta (a Utah mountain range) provides…Uinta beer? Uinta collecting pint glasses? Uinta making dumb puns?
